Types of Heating Systems

A heating system is a device used for maintaining temperature. It is a process of raising the temperature of a certain place, mostly enclosed to provide the occupants comfort from cold.


The earliest method of providing home or enclosed places heat is through an open fire though heating methods such as cast- irons stoves, fireplaces. Most cultures used wood as the earliest source of fuel to provide warmth. This has been popular to places such as China and Japan for example. Charcoal was also a good source of heat. The chimney or flue first appeared in Europe during the 13th century and was very helpful to most households. Around 600 BC enclosed stoves were first used by Chinese and the technology spread all over Russia a to northern Europe. It was in 1744 when Benjamin Franklin invented an improved design of the heating system which was called the Franklin stove.

Central heating was believed to have been originated in Greece but it was the Romans who become known and superior as heating engineers. Central heating again was adopted in the 19th century because of the industrial revolution which was caused by the increase in household and buildings. Steam became a popular choice as a heating system to most factories and mills.

As technology advances and as the demands for a heating system also increased, innovation has developed several types of heating system that can be used in many households and industrial areas. The most household can also install heating systems and here are some of the home heating system.

  • Furnace – this type is usually powered with gas. The air is forced through several series of ducts which allows it to distribute heats and condition the air all throughout the room.
  • Boiler and Radiator – this is one of the most common types of home heating system. This is operated by centralized boilers that allow the steam to circulate through pipes and to radiators units that are positioned around the house. This boiler or system is fueled by natural gas, fuel oil, liquid propane or electricity.
  • Hot water-based radiator – this is another modern type of radiator that is also known as a hydronic system. This system uses centralized boilers that heat water and allows it to circulate through a series of a system of water pipes going to radiators that has metal fins that will radiate the heat from the water going out of the room. This system can be fueled by propane, electricity, fuel oil or natural gas.
  • Heat pumps – This type can be used both for heating and cooling. This system used electricity and refrigerant to transfer heat. The disadvantage of this system is that it works only to areas with a moderate climate.
  • Hybrid Heating – this system uses the result of the combined energy from the heat pump to the furnace. The heat pump is the one that operates to provide the heating or cooling of the room.
  • Radiant Heating – this sends electric heat or hot water through a series of special tubes which can be installed in the floor, ceilings or sometimes walls. This radiant heating system can last for long time maintenance can sometimes be costly.
  • Ductless Mini-Splits – this gets rid of a lot of air ducts that work to create separate thermostat or HVAC Zones.

Keeping your temperature at the right range will all year through is important. It will not only provide you comfort but it is also an important part in keeping you healthy and letting you live comfortably.
